The Mayors Against Illegal Guns Event in Cranford NJ
It will probably pose an inconvenience to a number of people. On Monday, January 14th, at 10:00 AM, a portion of Springfield Avenue will be closed, and will remain so for much of Monday morning. Being such a busy thoroughfare, it will undoubtedly cause some a bit of angst. But consider WHY the closure is taking place. Cranford is slated to be the meeting place for a group of New Jersey mayors who are trying to make their home towns a safer place to live.
More than 70 mayors from New Jersey townships have thus far joined the bipartisan “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” coalition, bringing the total to more than 800 nationwide. Among them are Roselle mayor Jamel Hollery, Fanwood mayor Colleen Mahr, and Cranford mayor Thomas Hannen, as well as former Governor Jim Florio. As the one month anniversary of the Newtown massacre comes upon us, they are still waiting for Congress to pass sensible gun laws. They will meet with the media at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 14th, at the Cranford NJ municipal building, to discuss and present their solution for an issue that is at the forefront of America’s mind these days. They will also display a new national television advertisement featuring gun violence survivors and victims’ family members. And they’ll all be convening right here in Cranford! Joining them will be Michael Pohle, a Flemington resident who lost his son in the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings.
From there, the mayors will subsequently head to Washington on Wednesday to represent New Jersey, and to meet with federal lawmakers to discuss their plan and a timeline for introduction and a signature from the President. The mayors are demanding that guns finally be kept out of criminal hands and military style weapons are taken off our streets for good.
So curse a little under your breath if you are late for work and rerouted off of Springfield Avenue on Monday if you must. But don’t wallow in it, because these politicians are trying to make history and to change our immediate world and make it safer. So take a moment, between curses, to thank as well.
