It all started with a little Instagram love affair…with The Flower Shop ! This is an adorable floral boutique in Westfield at 1120 South Avenue W. I am always surfing the local Instagram feed and “theflowershopnj” kept catching my eye with their stunning pictures of fresh bouquets and cute gift items. Their whole shop looked like it was out of a fairy tale! The other day I decided to stop by and I am so happy I did!
Not only did I meet the sweetest and most interesting owners, but I got to hear the story of how the flower shop started and I found their entire shop to be breathtaking! I hope that you also enjoy this hidden gem and find some last minute gifts, decorations, and take part in their upcoming holiday arrangement class this week!
The outside of their store is enough to draw you in. The fresh Boxwood arrangements, the antique wheelbarrow, the fresh pine wreaths – everything so inviting and adorably arranged! As you walk into the shop, it’s so breathtaking and full of holiday cheer. It was immediately evident that the owners put a lot of thought, time, and creativity into making every section of the shop perfectly arranged!
I was instantly greeted by Barbara and she was so sweet and welcoming that I knew it was going to be a blog article right then and there!
Barbara Murphy and Lisa Corrao are the owners of “The Flower Shop” and their relationship is about as new as the business itself! Barbara was working as a floral designer and would often run into Lisa, who worked in the wholesale flower business. They became acquainted with one another and literally one day said, “We should go into business together!”
Almost three years ago, they discovered the site that was once the Towne Delicatessen in Westfield and decided that this was going to be their forever store. They needed to open by Mother’s Day and had a lot of work to do to flip the space from deli to fragrant floral boutique! They got to know each other better as they were preparing for opening day and figuring out the details of their business. Barbara commented, “We had just met and went from there -just like jumping off a bridge!”. They opened exactly on Mother’s Day 2015 and it’s been a wonderful adventure ever since. Barbara commented, “We just knew it would work out…we just love it. We get more excited than the customers! “
Barbara and Lisa pretty much do it all at “The Flower Shop” While weddings and funerals may be their largest bookings during any given week, they are extremely creative and design the most beautiful and unique arrangements. Not one is alike! Barbara mentioned that they even do custom home and business decorating for the holidays. You can invite them in to make your space outfitted for the season!
Barbara stated that they are “affordable luxury”! You can find a unique gift for $20 or less and it’s all hand crafted and designed just for the customer. They bring flowers from all over the world into their shop! Last week they received fresh wreaths and grave blankets from Pennslyvania. They decorated them by hand and now they can be yours for $30!
“The Flower Shop” is filled with interesting antiques and roadside finds that house gorgeous plant and flower arrangements. Barbara told me that some of the furniture was grabbed from the side of the road, up-cycled doors from an old house, and benches from an old church. They use antiques whenever they can to display their most recent creations for you to take home or gift to someone!
Currently, the shop is filled with holiday goodies. The Surf’s Up Candle Company from Belmar fills the shelves with their candles and soaps. Unique ornaments hang from beautifully decorated trees. The owners have even teamed up with the Time Warp Shoppe in Westfield and they sell and display their vintage items in the store!
“My favorite thing is putting plants in antique teacups – we love cool, different things – there is something for everyone!”
Not only do they sell amazing gifts and flower designs but they also have classes where you can make your own creation!
Upcoming Event: This Thursday, December 14, head to the shop for a “Boxwood Tree Workshop”! The event takes place from 7-9 pm and you are given all the supplies to make your own Boxwood tree for the holidays! They will instruct you on how to build the tree from scratch and then decorate with mosses, berries, pine cones, and colorful balls! The event is BYOB, refreshments are provided, and is $85 per person! Call them at 908-233-5413 to reserve your space!
