Cranford’s Premier Custom Framing & Art Hub: Celebrating 25 Years
For 25 years, The Artist Framer has been a cornerstone of Cranford’s vibrant art scene. Owned by local artist and framer Stefanie Lalor, the business has become more than just a frame shop—it’s a creative hub for artists, collectors, and the community. Stefanie is a beloved community member, always greeting visitors with a warm smile and hosting engaging events throughout the year. One of the most anticipated is the annual Cranford Community Paint Out event in the fall, where local artists of all ages capture beloved Cranford scenes on canvas. This event captures how Living in Cranford NJ is a thing of beauty!
We sat down with Stefanie to discuss her journey, the evolution of Cranford’s art scene, and what’s next for The Artist Framer.
How The Artist Framer Started: A Passion for Art & Framing in Cranford

What inspired you to open The Artist Framer?
I’ve been picture framing since I was 15 years old! In graduate school, I started framing for my fellow students and friends. That’s when I thought, I should start a business. Originally, I was going to call it The Artist’s Framer, but a wise man at the municipal office in Newark suggested I drop the ‘s’—if he only knew how right he was!
Plein Air Painting & Its Influence on The Artist Framer

How has plein air painting influenced your business?
My first plein air painting was at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh while I was an undergrad at Pitt. I dragged a large canvas into an open field to paint the scenery I loved. Fast forward 20 years, plein air competitions became a ‘thing,’ and I fell in love with painting on location. I enjoy the immediacy of capturing a scene and the people I meet along the way—whether on the street or in a park. Plein air has given me opportunities to paint with other artists and showcase local architecture, scenery, and daily life in New Jersey.
The Artist Framer: A Trusted Partner for Cranford’s Art Community
What’s a favorite exhibit you’ve hosted at The Artist Framer?

One of my favorite aspects of the business is the community exhibits. Over the years, we’ve hosted many events and artists I now consider dear friends have shown their work here. My favorite event is Slice of Life, which happens every March. It started nine years ago because I disliked the month—cold, unpredictable, and just blah. To combat that funk, I invited artists to create work from our recycled mat board, inspired by the theme Slice of Life. Now, 40-60 artists participate each year, and the reception is an absolute blast. It brings in new customers, longtime friends, and people who just happen to walk by.
Balancing Art, Business & Family as a Cranford Entrepreneur
How do you balance business, art, and family?
I feel incredibly fortunate to have built a business in Downtown Cranford. My children attended St. Michael’s School just two blocks away, allowing me to juggle work and family life. My husband has always been supportive—even when I call home to say I’ll be late because I need to catch the perfect light for a plein air painting. I’ve made space for painting both in our old and new locations, allowing me to continue creating in between framing and running the gallery.
The Evolution of Cranford’s Art Scene Over 25 Years
What changes have you seen in the Cranford art scene?
One of the biggest changes in framing? The art has gotten considerably bigger! Open-concept homes usually feature one or two large walls, creating demand for statement pieces. I’ve also noticed a surge of artists moving from the city to Cranford. With that, we’ve seen a rise in collaborative spaces, workshops, and exhibits. Local studios, art schools, and businesses are thriving, which is both exciting and inspiring.
From Cranford’s First Location to a New Space: The Artist Framer Has Grown

What was it like opening your first location in Cranford, and how did the transition to your current space unfold?
Opening my first location in 1999 was an exciting and nerve-wracking experience. My first customer walked in on Black Friday while I was still setting up, and I had to take a deep breath before helping her frame three Thanksgiving Day Parade posters. That first space, right in the center of town, was filled with energy—commuters rushing by, families heading to breakfast, and wonderful neighbors who became lifelong friends. Moving to my current location was bittersweet, but I was grateful for 22 years in that beautiful space. Now, I love having more accessibility, parking, and an open gallery for art shows and studio time.
Custom Framing as an Art Form: The Artist Framer’s Approach
How do you approach framing a piece to ensure it enhances the artwork?
Framing is a blend of art and craft. Every piece is unique, and I take the time to understand the artist’s intent and the customer’s vision. We curate a vast selection of materials—from pink glitter to four-inch gold ornate mouldings—ensuring each piece is preserved and beautifully displayed. The right frame enhances the artwork without overpowering it, making the final presentation feel complete.
Memorable Framing Projects & The Art of Preservation
What’s the most memorable framing project you’ve worked on?
It’s impossible to pick just one! Some projects are deeply personal—a print capturing the snout of a beloved pet, a 19th-century painting that left us in awe, police badges representing years of selfless service, or a slip of paper signed by Mother Teresa. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be every time we get to be part of someone’s special gift. (Well… I am just going to say that MY favorite piece of art Stefanie has framed is the sculpture piece my son made in 7th grade!!)

Stefanie Lalor’s Artistic Passion: Painting Cranford & Beyond
What’s your favorite subject to paint?
Portraits! I love the opportunity to truly see and understand a person while capturing their likeness and character on canvas. It’s a joy.

Do you have a favorite piece of artwork in The Artist Framer?

That’s a tough one! The answer changes, but at any given time, there’s a piece that defines my passion. A painting I did of Mr. Wagner’s Halloween skeletons holds a special place in my heart, as does a portrait of a gentleman I saw crossing North Ave. in a Stetson hat. I ran outside and asked if he’d sit for a portrait—it took some convincing, but he came back that afternoon, and it turned into one of my best paintings.

A Legacy of Community Support & Creativity in Cranford
Looking back over the past 25 years, what are you most proud of?
The people. My team, the artists, and the customers have made The Artist Framer what it is today. This shop is filled with creativity, talent, and an incredible community that has supported us for 25 years. That’s what I’m most proud of.
What does it mean to you to be a business owner in the Cranford community?
Cranford is special in so many ways. I am filled with gratitude for this supportive and welcoming community. The opportunity to share my two greatest passions—framing and art—with everyone who walks through our doors is truly the greatest gift.

Upcoming Events at The Artist Framer: 25th Anniversary Celebration
For our 25th anniversary, my staff and I decided to celebrate all 12 months! We kicked off January with a purple-themed community show (my favorite color!) and followed up in February with a retrospective of our favorite framed needlework art. We invited customers to lend us their stitched masterpieces, and the reception was a hit! March is Slice of Life, and in April, I’ll showcase my oil paintings from the past few years, featuring Cranford, New York, LBI, and some of my favorite portraits. You can visit our website for the full lineup of 2025 events.

A Tribute to Stefanie Lalor: Cranford’s Art & Framing Visionary
Stefanie is not only a talented artist and expert framer but also a dear friend of mine. She has beautifully framed my kids’ artwork, turning their creations into cherished keepsakes, and I’m lucky to have many of her incredible art pieces in my home. Beyond her artistic talent, she’s a generous supporter of the Cranford community. Each November, she plays a vital role in our Spotlight on Cranford Teen Artists event, helping to nurture and celebrate the creativity of young artists. It is so easy to see that our town is truly lucky to have Stefanie!
