Please tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to become an interior designer
I always loved art and creating. After spending nearly 15 years in television network news and corporate communications, I decided to take a leap of faith and go to Parsons School of Design. I finished a certificate program at Parsons, then went onto study at the New York School of Interior Design which directed me to my first design job. I worked for a restoration architect who specialized in Broadway theaters. It wasn’t long after my husband and I moved to Cranford and our daughter was born that I shifted focus to residential and started my own business working more locally.
What do you enjoy most about living in Cranford, NJ?
We are so lucky to be Living in Cranford, NJ! My husband and I were looking to move from our apartment in Weehawken and we were driving through town when we spotted The Cranford Hotel and stopped for lunch. We didn’t know a soul here, but it just felt right. Three months later we moved to town! Turns out Cranford is where we found many kindred souls – too many to count! The people and the overall spirit of kindness and neighbor-helping-neighbor are truly unparalleled!
What is your design approach when working on a new project?
When it comes to a new project, my approach starts with listening. Every project is unique. I start with a walk-through of the location or architectural plans, then set out to ask directed questions to determine the wants and needs of the client. The fun comes while working collaboratively with my clients and seeing all our work develop into beautiful spaces. I will shop with them at trade showrooms, narrowing choices, and reviewing construction processes- all while walking the site and answering all sorts of questions throughout the process.
Giving each customer a unique design experience
I.Designs, LLC’s business model is customer-focused. The drive to work in a broad range of styles draws influence from extensive travel, experiences, and education. I learn about new products and processes every day bringing it all to my work. I was so humbled and proud when during a conversation with a prospective client she said I was referred because “I make each house interior ‘fit’. The goal is to fit the people that live in it and fit the house itself. No two homes are alike.”
Could you share some details about a recent project that you find particularly exciting or challenging?
My work in restoration has been gratifying. Delving into history and bringing a piece of it back to life is exciting. Seeing how architects, contractors, metalsmiths, and furniture makers historically “re-invent” shapes and forms to create decorative elements in our environments inspires me every day! I love puzzling it all together to create unique environments.
Is there a particular project that holds a special place in your heart?
On a larger or commercial scale, I’ve been working with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey over the last several years in transforming their 40,000+ square foot Hillside warehouse facility and most recently their new food pantry prototype. Together with the marketing and facilities teams, we developed the space planning and finished selections and signage for the Foodbank. It’s been so rewarding to know I have a small part in such an important mission!
Making her mark in Cranford, NJ
In town, I feel fortunate to have recently worked with Downtown Cranford in their last “Makeover Takeover” of Periwinkles Fine Gifts. Also, I was involved with the restoration of Trinity Espiscopal Church and currently Trinity’s interior of Sherlock Hall. I.Designs LLC has ongoing consulting with several other downtown stores and restaurants.

Do you have a favorite type of space to design, and if so, what draws you to it?
I love designing multi-functional spaces. Kitchens and family rooms are my favorite with a sweet spot for kids’ rooms and nurseries! I feel so grateful for the opportunity to design and develop these spaces with my clients. To see them enjoy their homes and raise their families in comfortable, welcoming spaces is the best feeling ever!
Are there any design elements or materials that you find yourself frequently incorporating into your projects?
I usually gravitate to all things organic… real stone, metal, wood, glass, rattan, fibers. Obviously, function and budgets play into the mix on a project. There are also some wonderfully realistic man-made options that I use quite often that make sense for active families or commercial locations. For example, I often specify man-made quartz products for countertops. Luxury vinyl tiles are a big hit in high-trafficked areas. So many suppliers are refining this product to look more and more like real wood. Also, I am a big fan of natural woven wood shades. Offered in many styles and textures- this is an easy way to introduce a natural material into a space.
What are your “go-to” shops in the Cranford/Westfield area when looking for special pieces for decorating?
I.Designs LLC collaborates with many local businesses. For example, Periwinkles Fine Gifts and Hickory and Hill General Store and other great local shops are perfect to pick up home accessories. Additionally, there is Dovetails Antiques for that special storied piece! The Artist Framer is a favorite of mine, too. Stefanie and I started our local businesses about the same time. She and her staff are my “go-to “for framing for 20 plus years. (Mine, too!)
What trends do you anticipate being prominent in interior design for the upcoming spring/summer season in 2024?
I think this spring/summer you will see a lot of natural elements and rounded edges. Continuing on trend will be the lighter, natural stained woods with lots of featured rattan and caning. There is a definite throwback vibe to the 70s, with rounded edges and arches everywhere and the layering of bold prints.
Regarding paint, wallcovering, and textiles…
I see two trends: natural and calming neutral rooms with accent colors in the greens and soothing blues. Grass-cloth papers by Phillip Jeffries are a favorite. Love Benjamin Moore 2108-60 Abalone or Sherwin-Williams 6239 Upward paint colors in keeping with this fresh, coastal theme.
Look for loads of rich color everywhere!
Gone are the days of gray on top of gray. Jeweled-tone walls and furniture with a story are making a comeback. As people develop their spaces, the desire to incorporate meaningful furniture and art will continue to increase. People are drawn to the idea of sustainability. The repurposing of Grandma’s dresser or an antique found during an afternoon stroll or, perhaps, using a fabric that is comprised of recycled materials and is family-friendly. Kravet is a go too for these family-friendly textiles. As a matter of fact, they just introduced a fabric that promotes wellness.
What advice do you have for homeowners looking to refresh their spaces for the spring/summer season without undergoing a complete overhaul?
For people looking to do a quick and easy weekend refresh for spring, I recommend clearing the current surfaces in the room to make some visual space. Then introduce a new green plant and/or a few nature-inspired, table-top accessories. Another quick update is to change toss pillows on a sofa and cast a light throw over a chair. Art is another quick-change update. Hang pieces that are seasonally inspired. You can always use 3M hooks to not leave marks on your wall finish.
