“Germans Are Funny, Too!” . . . . How can you not be hooked by a title such as this?
Germans Are Funny, Too (Sub-titled “Stories of my Cuckoo Kraut Family”) is the title of Barbara Steingas’ book, and will be the topic of her discussion at the Cranford Community Center at 220 Walnut Avenue on Wednesday, August 20th, at 7:30 PM.
Steingas grew up in New Jersey speaking both English and German, and she has traveled to Germany to visit family numerous times over the years. Germans Are Funny, Too! Was derived from this experience. It is full of fun anecdotes about her grandparents, mother, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Although the book is primarily humorous, it does also include some somber stories, including the account of how her grandfather opposed the Nazis and survived by singing opera . . . . no, that’s not a typo . . . in a concentration camp.
A review of the book on Amazon states, “The biggest strength of this book is that each story is told in a way that makes it easy for a reader to relate to, regardless of background (German or non-German). It also illuminates the thousand different ways that one’s family, culture and history can impact one’s day to day life. The comfortable, easy-going tone of the author gives the reader the sense of hearing a friend sharing treasured memories, and is one of the best aspects of the story”. (Glaister Kerr, formerly of Miramax)
Her presentation, like her book, promises to be upbeat and full of laughs, while simultaneously being informative. Admission is free, so why not come out that night and enjoy? In fact, to complete the “German night,” you might want to stop in afterwards at one of the many fine Cranford N.J. restaurants and pubs that offer quality beer, and enjoy one to complete the night!
