Preparing taxes. Perhaps it should be called “Preparation T,” since it is such a pain in the . . . . well, you get the idea. The income tax system is so confusing and convoluted that very few can manage doing their taxes without the help of a computer program or a professional, both of which can be costly. If you are, or if you know, a senior citizen, there is help available!
The Cranford Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with AARP Tax Aide, is taking appointments for free . . . . that’s right – FREE . . . 2013 income tax preparation for Garwood and Cranford residents, geared specifically towards senior citizens with low to moderate incomes. These professionals will help with both state and federal filings, which are filed electronically, as well as with Property Tax Reimbursement. The preparation sessions are held in Room 204 at The Cranford Community Center on Monday and Friday afternoons (excluding Good Friday), from 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM, with hourly appointments at 12:00, 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 PM. Friday, April 12th, will be the final day this service is offered . . . . but why wait until the 11th hour and stress yourself? Participants taking advantage of this service need to bring
*copies of federal & state returns (2012)
* documentation of wages, interest, dividends, capital gains, social security, etc.(Forms 1099, 1099R, 1099B – W2 & SSA)
* property tax assessment for 2012 and February 2012 tax bill
* identification and bank routing number if requesting direct deposit for a return
Tax preparation is stressful and confusing. Procrastination will not help the situation at all. If help is available, and free, why not jump on the bandwagon? Ben Franklin told us that “nothing is certain except death and taxes.” Well, here’s some free help with ONE of these, at least!
