Droeschers Mill a Potential Historical Landmark!
Droeschers Mill is as much a part of Cranford as anything. You can still spot young kids fishing near the old mill on a pleasant day, and the building itself conjures up images of an easier yesteryear. It’s a Cranford icon!
On Thursday, May 29th, at 7:30 PM at the Cranford Community Center at 220 Walnut Avenue, a special public meeting on potentially designating Droeschers Mill as a Cranford Historic Landmark was held. The Mill has been proposed as a local landmark by the Cranford Historic Preservation Advisory Board based on two criteria. First, there is its value as part of the development and commercial history of Cranford. And secondly, there is its association with Severin Droescher, a significant individual in Cranford’s history. A copy of the fully detailed proposal is available in the municipal offices of the Township. Everyone is invited to the public meeting, where HPAB will review the proposal and solicit comments, both for and against the proposal. If the proposed nomination is agreed to, HPAB will forward a report and recommendations concerning the Mill to the Township Committee. The Township Committee will then discuss and decide if the designation will go forward.
Any building designated as a historic landmark is subject to zoning regulations and requirements of the Municipal Land Use Law – there are no further restrictions on the property.
This is the second building proposed as a historical landmark in Cranford this year. The Crane Phillips House was accepted by the Township Committee as the first historic landmark earlier in the year.
