Did you know that the Cranford Dramatic Club ( CDC) is the longest continuously-producing community theater in the state of New Jersey? For over 90 years, this well respected local theatre company has been producing full seasons of musicals, plays, and family programming featuring the areas brightest talent.
CDC’s first home was the Sherlock Hall of the Trinity Episcopal Church. In the 1920s, CDC moved to the now-defunct Casino in Cranford. (Yes, Cranford had a thriving casino once upon a time!)
After World War II, many CDC shows were produced at Cranford High School. Then, in the mid-1950’s, a group of the club’s members decided CDC needed a home of their own. Thus the CDC Theater on Winans Avenue was born. The theatre officially opened to the public in 1957 and has been thriving ever since. (Xanax) It was renovated in 1992, and again in 2003, and continues to flourish due to the generosity of its patrons.
CDC has continued to produce full seasons of musicals, plays, children’s productions, and productions of new and experimental works. CDC has also recently begun to host visiting performers, artists and theatre companies. Check out their website at http://www.cdctheatre.org/ for upcoming season performances, including “The Rocky Horror Picture Show!”
What a great local, inexpensive foray into the world of dramatic arts, and something different and fun to do! Check out a performance!
