Have you ever wished you could make it into The Guinness Book of World’s Records? Well, now is your chance! And you don’t have to swallow bottlecaps, walk a tightrope across a gorge, or drive nails into any body parts. On Thursday, June 14th, you can help set a new record by participating in a free swim lesson for the entire family. The Westfield YMCA is participating in an attempt at setting a record for the world’s largest swim lesson, held simultaneously across the globe at various locations. There are more than 500 official WLSL host locations around the globe, representing 46 U.S. states, 24 countries, and 5 continents. Olympic gold medalists Rowdy Gaines and Janet Evans will join kids and families world wide to set the record, spread the word about water safety, and offer families an opportunity to strengthen swim skills.
Drowning currently remains the second leading cause of injury-related death of children ages 1-14, yet it is highly preventable. This is an opportunity to arm children, as well as adults, against potential tragedy. It can also be an opportunity to create a life-long love of swimming for enjoyment and exercise. With summer right in front of us, and beaches and pools enticing swimmers, it’s the perfect time to prepare for safe swimming.
This event is FREE for both members AND non-members, and is open to all swim levels. In-person registration is required by Sunday, June 10th, and can be done at the Main YMCA Facility Welcome Center. And, as a special bonus, all participants will also be entered into a drawing to win a series of free swim lessons!
