Mr. J’s Deli
John Taggert started working at Mr. J’s 30 years ago, when he was in high school, and the store had just opened. He worked part time at the deli throughout college, then moved to full time hours, and . . . long story made short . . . eventually took over the business. He and his business have become a Cranford staple.
The deli serves a fantastic breakfast, including omelets, French toast, and pancakes. And all of the specialties are names after local streets and parks, like “The South Avenue Omelet,” (spinach, feta cheese, and diced tomato), or “The Nomahegan” (thick French toast topped with cinnamon, bananas, and pecans).
Lunchtime usually finds the place packed with regulars, eat-in customers, delivery orders, and catering platters. The deli also runs daily specials, which customers can keep up with via their Facebook page at Mr J’s Deli. A variety of subs, salads, and specialty dishes are available. But, make no mistake, Mr. J’s Deli is known best for its “sloppy joes.” Their Sloppy Joe Platters are enormously popular with locals, and are frequently ordered for special occasions, tailgates, and holidays.
John puts in long hours at the restaurant to ensure the food is fresh and top-notch Everything is homemade and fresh bread is delivered every morning. And John is there every day, sharing smiles and stories with his customers along with the great food. Why not stop in for a bite and a smile?
