A Sweet Journey: Amanda’s Story

Amanda Sanabria is a first-generation American with deep roots in the Brazilian and Portuguese cultures. Growing up in Linden, New Jersey, with two older brothers, her love for pastry started young. As a matter of fact, they often fought over who got to lick the spoon when their parents made desserts!

Now, Amanda is married and living in Clark with her husband and two dogs. She attended culinary school in Florida and worked in bakeries, coffee shops, and a cake decorating business. Upon returning to New Jersey, she worked as a pastry chef in Montclair until COVID forced the shop to close. That led her to a job in a chocolate factory, reigniting her passion for chocolate. “After three years of working from home, it was time to expand—and that brings us to today!”

The Meaning Behind Lily & Sparrow

The name Lily & Sparrow is inspired by Amanda’s faith, taken from Matthew 6:26-29 in the Bible. “My faith is important to me. ‘Lily’ represents compassion, love, passion, and happiness. ‘Sparrow’ embodies joy, hard work, resilience, and courage. I wanted those attributes reflected in my business and the experience of customers when they enter the shop.”

Why Cranford?

Amanda’s connection to Cranford runs deep. “I grew up coming here with friends after class at Union County College. I always knew how beautiful Downtown Cranford was. It’s walkable, has ample parking, and offers more activities compared to nearby towns.”

Finding the perfect location was a challenge, but the community’s enthusiasm sealed the deal. “Downtown Cranford Executive Director Caren Demyen and the town were so encouraging and helpful throughout the process. Cranford is known for its events that bring people together and support small businesses. It was the perfect place for Lily & Sparrow.”

Culture Meets Chocolate at Lily & Sparrow

Amanda’s heritage plays a key role in her flavor profiles. “I create flavors inspired by my Brazilian and Portuguese culture. Two of my most popular flavors are Romeo & Juliet and Pastel de Nata. Romeo & Juliet—a blend of guava and goat cheese—is a staple in Brazil and Latin America. Pastel de Nata is inspired by Portugal’s famous custard tart. Both flavors sell out quickly!”

Edible Art: The Magic Behind the Designs

One of the standout features of Lily & Sparrow chocolates is their stunning visual appeal. “People always ask, ‘Are these marbles?’ or say, ‘They’re too pretty to eat!’” Amanda explains. “I tell them it’s edible art—you eat with your eyes first!”

She carefully selects color palettes and sketches designs on her iPad before testing them on chocolate. “I imagine what a flavor looks like to me. It’s like in Ratatouille when Remy tastes food and sees colors. The aim is to create visually stunning chocolates that catch people’s attention.” To put it another way…your mouth will be as happy as your eyes!

Seasonal Flavors & Special Releases

With Easter and Mother’s Day approaching, Lily & Sparrow is rolling out seasonal flavors. Customers can look forward to Key Lime Pie, Raspberry Linzer Cookie, and Cookies & Cream. Traditional chocolate bunnies and large Easter eggs will also be available.

“I’m especially excited about the ‘Taste of Cranford’ chocolate box, inspired by local businesses and restaurants. The release date is still to be announced. I can’t wait to share it!”

Lily & Sparrow isn’t just about everyday indulgence—it’s also the perfect place for custom chocolates for special events. “I love working on custom orders for weddings, baby showers, and other celebrations,” Amanda shares. “Private tastings help clients choose flavors and designs that fit their vision. Every order is personal, and I make sure each chocolate is crafted with care.”

“There’s so much I want to do, but I have to pace myself since I’m the only one making the chocolate right now,” Amanda shares. Amanda also participates in many Cranford events and can be found at regional vendor showcases like the Chocolate Expo. Due to high demand, Dubai bars will soon be available year-round.
