The Mane Event, (you’ve gotta love the name!), at 107 North Union Avenue in the heart of the Cranford shopping district,  is a long-time staple of the Cranford community, and was one of the first “modern day” hair salons to open its doors in town.  It is truly a family salon, where patrons of all ages are welcomed and made to FEEL welcome.  It is a genuine throwback to the old fashioned, Americana, friendly, local shop.

Owner and stylist Penny Schmal-Andrews, who lives right here in Cranford with her family, graduated from Roselle Park High School and Union County Vocational School, where she earned her degree in Cosmetology in 1976.  She started her career in salons in surrounding Westfield and Roselle before coming to work in Cranford in 1979. After working at The Mane Event for 13 successful years, she ended up purchasing the salon in 1992. Since then, she has added waxing, a full retail line, night hours, senior discounts, and opening 6 days a week, while continuing to uphold the shop’s place as a community staple.  The Mane Event hosts a Cut-A-Thon each year to benefit local charities Project Home and Cranford Family Care, as a way to give back to the community in which the business found such long, happy life.  The company also routinely donates gift certificates and baskets to various organizations and youth sports, along with most school fundraisers public and private continuously throughout the year. Community helping community.

Men, women, and children can all find services here.  They offer everything you could think of . . . . cuts, color, highlights, up-dos, keratin smoothing, blow-outs . . . . you name it, they do it!  And the staff is so very friendly!  If you have “hair stress,” and have some questions you want answered before making any “big decisions,” you can stop in and ask them, and they will be happy to use their knowledge to help you out.  They take the time to listen and advise.  And, unlike so many “fluff-salons,” their prices are extremely reasonable and realistic to the average wallet.
