If you believe that keeping the salt and pepper shakers on your kitchen table is “stocking up on spices,” then you may need a little inspiration. If you like to cook and try new things, new flavors, and new combinations . . . . well, hey . . . . you may enjoy a little inspiration, as well. Luckily, the perfect place to get just such inspiration is very nearby!
The Savory Spice Shop, located at138 E Broad Street in Westfield, right between Prospect Street and Elm Street, one block from the train station and in the heart of downtown Westfield, is an amazing place! As soon as you walk in, your senses of sight and smell come alive, as the vivid colors of the hugely varied spices dance in front of you, and the unparalleled blend of aromas surrounds you. (Oh, wait . . . . for the salt-and-pepper-people, “It’s pretty and it smells good!”)
Owned and operated by Becky Solheim & Jackie Mittlehammer, this franchise shop offers more varieties of common and uncommon spices than most people could even name. In addition to the gazillion varieties of spices, which are ground fresh weekly, they also sell spice blends, herbs, salts, extracts, sauces, stocks, gift sets, books, and specialty items. And Becky and Jackie really know their stuff! Just tell them what you are making, or a rough idea of what you might be looking for, and they will be happy to help you out and give you ideas. The prices rival grocery store prices, but the variety is so much more vast! Almost all of their products can be purchased online, as well. But then you won’t get the flood of color and smell that accompanies a trip to the local store! The Savory Spice Shop mission is “to offer high-quality herbs, spices, and seasonings at a fair price in customer-friendly quantities. We strive to remain innovative and provide a fun, inspiring, and educational environment for customers and employees.”
They even offer some fun classes and workshops. On Monday, January 28th, at 7:00 PM, you can join them for “Mustard Mania,” and learn how to make and customize your own mustard. Or head in on Wednesday, February 6th, at 7:00 PM, for “Healthy Hearts.” In honor of February being American Heart Month, Elizabeth Miller has created a great class focused on heart healthy meals, so you can “eat to make your heart happy and your taste buds hum!” Learn what foods are best for your heart while you sample how to make them taste great. Contact the store at (908) 264-8947 for more information on these workshops. And be sure to check out the amazing website at Savory Spice Shop .
