Angel’s Wings by Rich Pierce Hoping for a Super Bowl Victory for GlucaGirl!
While most people are gearing up for Super Bowl parties this week – digging up recipes for chili and dips, buying decorations, filling out their squares, stocking up on beer, and anticipating half time commercials – Cranford resident Rich Pierce has wings and a very special charity on his mind! Rich is “The Wingman” behind Angel’s Wings by Rich Pierce and hundreds of local residents place their buffalo wing orders weeks before the big day. Not only does his “secret” recipe bring people back for more trays – it’s knowing that his wings will help a community member in need of assistance that makes people feel good about the whole transaction.
Angel’s Wings History
Rich Pierce is a licensed architect by day – but has always be a “wing lover”! It all started with his passion for those tasty wings and trying out new recipes whenever he could. He would bring his wings to various parties and soon, by word of mouth, people were calling him to place orders for events all over town! His wing trays were a coveted addition to any party! The name of business, “Angel’s Wings” is in honor of the Pierces’ beloved son, Nick, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 2 ½ . Nick passed away as a result of a furniture accident. Rich and his family have made it their mission to promote furniture safety procedures. They work to help pass legislative bills that mandate tipping protections. The Pierces originally gave all the money from his wing tray proceeds to a furniture safety awareness group where he was actively involved.
Eventually Rich decided to donate locally when he realized that the majority of his “wing fans” were Cranford residents. He also felt it was better to give back to his own community. Every year for the Super Bowl the Pierce family helps a local resident in need. In the past, he built a wheelchair ramp for a local child, sponsored a Special Olympics team, and financially helped a neighborhood family who had just lost their wife and mother to cancer.
Angel’s Wings and GlucaGirl!
This year Rich’s Angel’s Wings’ proceeds will go to help his 14 year old neighbor, Maeve aka GlucaGirl. Maeve was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes two years ago. Her dream is to have a very specialized diabetic alert dog – specifically trained with samples of her saliva and body chemistry scents to know when her blood sugar is at a dangerous level. These dogs can sense a drop or spike before technology (her continuous monitor) and can wake up her parents during the night if there is danger. The financial burden on Maeve’s family recently with insulin, supplies, and various hospitalizations have left them unable to meet the extensive costs of purchasing this special dog and the training involved. Maeve’s parents are our Cranford neighbors Gretchen Boger-O’Bryan and Thomas Boger-O’Bryan. Gretchen is the Development and Communications Manager for CASA of Union County an organization which advocates for local foster youths. Thomas is a Licensed Home Inspector with US Inspect (and a former science teacher!). Both are active supporters of our community, and pretty spectacular people!
