If you’ve been curious about learning Mah Jongg, now is the perfect time. A beautiful new Mah Jongg club is opening this month at 75 Westfield Avenue in the heart of Clark, NJ living. Whether you’re brand new to the game or ready to show off your tile skills, The Mah Jongg Club has something for everyone.
Founded by Meg Amelia, known by many as “The Tile Whisperer,” The Mah Jongg Club is about more than just playing Mah Jongg. As a former special education and business teacher, Meg found that teaching the game uses many of the skills she loved most in education—patience, communication, encouragement, and helping people build confidence while learning something new.
“People of all ages are discovering the game — friends are learning together, couples are joining classes, families are playing across generations, and longtime players are reconnecting with something they loved years ago.” – Meg Amelia
The club was created as a welcoming place for players of all levels to learn, play, and connect in a beautiful and relaxed setting. We recently chatted with Meg about her love of Mah Jongg, what inspired her to open the club, and why she believes this classic game is helping people reconnect in today’s tech-driven world.
Meet Meg Amelia, The Tile Whisperer

How did you first learn to play Mah Jongg?
I first learned American Mah Jongg many years ago through an adult education class, and I was instantly drawn to it. At first it seemed mysterious and complicated, but once I began understanding the strategy and rhythm of the game, I completely fell in love with it. When I moved to a new area, joining Mah Jongg games helped me meet people and build friendships. In many ways, it was truly a lifesaver for me.
Why She Opened a Mah Jongg Club In Clark NJ

Over the years I taught hundreds of people to play, and I kept hearing the same thing: ‘I wish there was a beautiful place where we could gather regularly to play.’ I realized people were looking for more than lessons — they were looking for community.
The club is also deeply personal to me. I dedicated it to my 95-year-old mother, Lee, who taught me the importance of friendship, hospitality, and always making room for people at the table.
Why Mah Jongg is Having a Moment
I think people are craving genuine social connection again. Mah Jongg brings people together face-to-face in a way that feels joyful and meaningful. It’s mentally stimulating, social, relaxing, and fun all at once!
Ready to Learn Mah Jongg in the Cranford/Westfield NJ Area?
For someone who has never played, how would you describe the game?
I usually describe it as a mix of strategy, skill, memory, and a little luck — all wrapped into a social experience. It’s played with beautiful tiles instead of cards, and every game feels different. There’s excitement, anticipation, and lots of laughter around the table.
Is Mah Jongg difficult to learn?
Beginners can absolutely jump right in. Like anything new, it takes a little practice, but most people are surprised by how quickly they begin understanding the game. The hardest part is simply showing up the first time. Once people sit down and begin learning, they quickly realize how welcoming and enjoyable the game really is.
